Clyde Newton McClellan was born on September 14, 1910. Like three of the six children of Elijah Shanklin and Beedie Frances (Archer) McClellan, Clyde Newton McClellan was born in the McClellan home in Hill Community, near Gouldbusk, Texas, Coleman County, Texas. When school age, Clyde Newton McClellan attended Hill School, then Voss School. Then, from 1923-1927, he attended Coleman High School, graduating from Coleman High School in May, 1927. He and his friend, Lester Standridge, boarded in the home of Mrs. Ella Mulkey during these school years and Clyde worked part-time at the Piggly Wiggly Grocery store in Coleman, Texas. After graduation from Coleman High School, Clyde Newton McClellan began full-time employment at the Piggly Wiggly Grocery store and continued to work there until 1966, having become manager of the store during these forty-three years as a retail grocery-man and a respected businessman in Coleman, Texas. He was awarded several citizenship awards during these years.

Clyde Newton McClellan was introduced to Ada Merle Moran in the summer of 1932 when she visited her sister, Edna, in Coleman, Texas. The introduction was arranged by Edna at the Piggly Wiggly Grocery store where Clyde Newton McClellan worked. It is reported that Clyde said to his friend, “That is the girl I am going to marry!” One year later(summer of 1933) when Ada Merle Moran visited in Colelman, Texas again, Merle and Clyde became friends, then sweethearts, and April 16, 1934 they were married. One child was born to this marriage, Timothy Moran McClellan, on January 11, 1942.

Ada Merle (Moran) McClellan told of her first visit to the Elijah Shanklin and Beedie Frances( Archer) McClellan home in Hill Community, Coleman County, Texas. She related that she was seated in the McClellan living room and could see through the door into the kitchen. She reported that she was stunned to see a chicken walking across the floor of the kitchen!

Clyde Newton and Ada Merle (Moran) McClellan had primary care for Clyde’s aging parents, Elijah Shanklin and Beedie Frances (Archer) McClellan during the years of 1949 –1961, when they continued to live on the McClellan farm in the Hill Community, Coleman County, Texas. In 1961, Elijah Shanklin and Beedie Frances (Archer) moved to a house they had purchased in Santa Anna, Coleman County, Texas. The primary care of Elijah Shanklin and Beedie Frances (Archer) McClellan became the responsibility of Clyde’s oldest sister, Lottie Frances (McClellan) Cozart after Lottie’s husband, Jesse, died in 1961. She moved into the guest house behind the residence of Elijah Shanklin and Beedie Frances (Archer) McClellan. Lottie Frances (McClellan) Cozart cared for her parents until each died; Beedie Frances (Archer) died October 11,1964 and Elijah Shanklin McClellan died February 25, 1968. She moved into her parents house and remained there until her death June 27, 1978 in the West Texas Medical Center, Abilene, Texas.

Clyde Newton and Ada Merle(Moran) McClellan continued to live in Coleman, Texas where he died on January 12, 1982 in the West Texas Medical Center, Abilene, Texas. The date and place of Ada Merle (Moran) McClellan’s death are not known at this time.
